How to Make Life-Changing Decisions

A few days ago, I went on a short trip back home to New York with our son. We flew out of BWI Airport and parked near where I used to work. It’s been about fifteen years since I was last in that area and it had changed significantly. What was once just trees was now a shopping center. A few older buildings had been removed and replaced with commercial real estate, hotels, and gas stations. There was a lot more development. It reminded me of my professional journey. In 2008, I quit my job at Booz Allen Hamilton to work full-time on a blog. I liked my job. It was very stable, and well-paying, the people were great, and the company was fair and supportive. I had a security clearance and job security. I could’ve worked there for decades and made a good life for myself and my family. But I quit. It was a life-changing decision. At the moment, it felt like a huge decision – quitting my stable job to pursue a “blog.” It was a hard decision and one that I spent quite some time on. Here’...

Cleo Review: The Money App that Talks Back

Cleo is one of many budgeting apps that does more than just budget. It’s a budget app, first and foremost, but it’s also designed to help you build savings (providing strategies to help you get there), benefit from cash advances, and even build or improve your credit. What’s immediately apparent is that Cleo makes it personal and even fun! The app will “speak” to you in ordinary language, sometimes bordering on crude. It may even seem like Cleo is “taking you to the woodshed” for bad behavior. But that’s pretty much how this app works. If you’re interested in a different kind of budgeting app that goes beyond budgeting and does it in a way that’s… different …Cleo may be of interest. But how does it compare to top budgeting and savings apps like YNAB or Acorns? Find out in this Cleo review. Table of Contents What is Cleo? How Does Cleo Work? Is Cleo Safe? How to Save Money on Subscriptions with a VPN

Thanks to inflation, prices have been on the rise for the past couple of years. In times like these, one of the best financial strategies is to find ways to save money on ordinary purchases. An effective yet unusual strategy is to save money on subscriptions with a Virtual Private Network (VPN) . If that sounds strange, it is a thing – and an unexpected benefit of having a VPN service. We can’t take credit for this idea. It came about through an email to Jim from Noah Kagan of OKDork , so we can thank him for introducing the entire concept. So, it is new to us and a complete revelation. Because a VPN essentially hides your identity, it’s possible to make purchases for everyday products and services from foreign countries where those items might cost less than they do in the US.  It helps that good VPN services operate out of multiple countries. It’s a complicated topic, and a bit technical, at that. But let’s plow through it anyway. As you’ll see, the savings can be substantia...

Active Investing – Definition, Strategies, Vs Passive Income

Traders can choose between active and passive investing styles. Both contrasting trading methodologies offer unique benefits and risks to investors. Let us discuss what active and passive investing styles and strategies are and which is a better choice for investors. What is Active Investing? Active investing is an investing style where the investors are actively involved in buying, holding, and selling financial securities to make profits. The aim of active investing is to beat the market with quick decision-making. Investors buy and sell securities for a short time and seek higher returns than a benchmark or industry average return. Active investing strategies often rely on smaller profit margins per trade and include several transactions in a single trading day to maximize return on investment. How Does Active Investing Work? Active investment management requires special skills and knowledge of stock markets. Portfolio managers utilize the services of a team of analysts and w...

Entrepreneurs: Selling Is a Listening Skill

Most small businesses fail within the first couple years. Many of these businesses could have made it if things had been done differently. Sometimes entrepreneurs or new business owners overspend before the business has any business; they burn through their cash before they have enough coming in to replace what they’re spending. Often this is seen as undercapitalization, but not every instance of undercapitalization is simply too small of a pile of money; it can be using the money on unnecessary things so that there’s not enough money left for the things that are necessary. It’s an induced undercapitalization. Other businesses are ideas whose time has not yet come and probably never will. We’ve all seen these pie-in-the sky schemes that seem untethered to reality. The financial basics of business success can be expressed as a simple equation. The sum of the revenues must be greater than the sum of the expenses. To put it as simply as possible: The money coming into the business ha...

A man of no ambition

A memory came to me this morning while I was walking the dog, a memory of those days when I was fresh out of college and just beginning to work for my father at the box factory. A salesman had come knocking on our door. This was strange since the box factory was (and still is) located in a rural area. But somehow this guy had found us and he was there to make his pitch: He was a salesman who trained salesmen. (And, presumably, saleswomen although this wasn't part of the spiel in 1992.) Dad, amused, introduced this fellow to me. “This is J.D.,” Dad said. “He's our salesman. Talk to him.” So, this guy sat down with me in a back room of the shabby trailer house that served as company HQ. (This was the very trailer house I'd grown up in. And trust me when I say it was a pit, a sty. It was just as bad as you're imagining. Maybe worse.) “How would you like to make more money?” the salesman who trained salesmen said to me. He was an older gentleman dressed in a brown cordu...

What to Do with Your Money Now that Savings Rates are Up

Making sure your money is working hard for you is an important skill to have if you want to have a sound financial situation. While it might be easier to keep all of your money in the same accounts no matter what (“set it and forget it”), a policy like that could cause you to potentially miss out on hundreds if not thousands of dollars. With interest rates going up, you may want to take a look at where your money is stored and make sure you’re getting the best deal possible. Why are savings account interest rates up? Savings rates vary for a variety of reasons, but many banks tie the interest rates they charge on loans and the interest rates they pay on savings accounts to the Fed Funds Rate, which is controlled by the U.S. Federal Reserve. With the Fed Funds Rate going up , that is causing many banks to raise the interest rate that they pay on savings accounts as well. The target for the Federal Funds Rate has gone up by 3% since the beginning of the year. What’s the best savings r...
