How to Become a More Patient Investor

In 2008, Warren Buffett offered a million dollar bet to any hedge fund brave enough to accept – an S&P 500 index fund would beat any portfolio of hedge funds over 10 years. Ted Seides, a co-founder of ProtΓ©gΓ© Partners, took the bet. In 2019, eight months before the end of the bet, Seides conceded . It’s almost impossible to beat the market . Trained professionals, who spend all of their time doing this, are unable to do so on a regular basis. The only skill you need to beat those trained professionals is the ability to be patient. Buy and hold. And then wait. Patience, however, is not one of my strong suits. When it comes to business or sports or anything else, I want to be moving. More practice. More work. More everything. But that’s not what makes you a better investor because it doesn’t lean on my only advantage against the professionals – time. In a world where the professionals are measured in their performance each quarter and year, my performance is measured in decades

10 Facebook Marketplace Scams to Avoid in 2023

Just the other day, I listed something on Facebook Marketplace and someone immediately messaged me (huge 🚩!) about it. Actually, three people did and they all sent the same message! They all wanted to know the same thing – would I ship the item to them? What payment did I accept? I knew for a fact that they were setting me up for a scam. Three identical messages were a huge clue but so was the request for shipping. I bet they were going to send me a cashier’s check for too much, ask me to cash it and send them back the excess. It’s a classic advance fee scam. If I used our simple trick for spotting a scam , it wouldn’t have passed. Unfortunately, Facebook Marketplace scams are more and more common. Criminals are using all sorts of tactics to get you to hand over your hard-earned cash for nothing.  Thankfully, there are ways to recognize attempted fraud before it’s too late. Take a look at the following list of common Facebook Marketplace scams so that you can learn to avoid them.

What happens if you beat the stock market

It’s common knowledge that the vast majority of active fund managers fail to beat their benchmark indices. Every year, Warren Buffett writes a letter to Berkshire Hathaway shareholders and the first page is a table comparing the annual change in the market value of Berkshire Hathaway vs. the S&P 500 with dividends included. His compounded returns through 2022 are impressive (19.8% vs. 9.9%) but it’s uncommon for him to beat the S&P 500 on a year to year basis (and Berkshire Hathaway owns entire private companies, in addition to shares in a handful of public companies). If most active fund managers can’t do it and Warren Buffett, one of the most successful investors of all time, can’t do it… how can you? But every day, people try. And sometimes they succeed. And guess what happens when they do? Nothing.
